The Beginning
When I was just 19 years old, my mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Faced with the harsh reality of her impending departure, I wanted to capture her essence, her experiences, her wisdom – all that she was. So, I handed her a notebook, hoping she could chronicle her life journey for posterity.
A Cherished Notebook
Four months later, she left us, leaving behind a notebook that soon became my most cherished possession. It was a window into her world, her battles, her love, her hopes, and her dreams. But as precious as that notebook was, I realized that it lacked something crucial – structure.
The Challenge
Think about it. If you had to document your entire life in a notebook, where would you start? What aspects of your life would you choose to highlight? The task is overwhelming, even more so when you know your days are numbered.
A New Approach
That’s when I decided to approach this task differently with my Grandma Eleanor. I started thinking about all the questions I wish I had asked my mother, all the stories and life lessons I wish I had collected from her. I put together a list of these questions, compiled them in a binder, and gave it to my Grandma Eleanor. She was free to answer them at her own pace, and in doing so, she painted a vivid picture of her life.
A Success Story
The project was a hit. Grandma Eleanor’s side of the family was deeply moved, and it brought us all closer together. Encouraged by the positive response, I decided to repeat the process with my Grandma Arvada.
Overcoming Adversity
However, there was a significant hurdle – Grandma Arvada had developed tremors and could no longer write with a pen and paper.
The Birth of Memorybanc
However, adversity often breeds innovation. Grandma Arvada had recently started using talk-to-text to stay connected with her grandchildren. This technology sparked the idea for Memorybanc – why not use a text-based solution to capture and share our loved ones’ biographies?
Your Guide to Living Biographies
And thus, Memorybanc was born – your text-based guide to preserving and sharing your family’s living biography. We’ve taken the lessons from my personal journey and created a platform that facilitates meaningful conversations, brings families closer, and ensures that no precious memory or valuable life lesson is ever lost.
